The Road to Nationals 2015 - Part 2

Postby Chimpster » Tue Jun 09, 2015 7:02 pm

Site Article: http://netrunners.co.uk/articles/the%20 ... t%202.html

In part 2 of his UK Nationals winning tournament report series, Alex White has taken the time to go into the details of his tremendous day, from the swiss through to the top 16 cut.

Once again, a massive congratulations to Alex from everyone at netrunners.co.uk, and though he has titled the article 'The End of the Road', we're all excited to cheer him on at Worlds 2015 and see that journey continue!

Great report, and a well written article.
I'd like to say that you make too big a deal on your luck. You are an amazing player and you shouldn't put yourself down by saying you got lucky. You deserve to be the National Champ, no doubt in my mind.

Congratulations :)

I came near last in that tournament and I think it is worth stressing that I also believe luck plays a smaller part in this game than you are giving it credit for.

Clearly Having won a store champ and a regional, topping the swiss and then going undefeated in elimination is down to insane amounts of skill - not many people could do that... but luck here and there is always helpful. Specially in the cut. There is a few players such as Alex in the UK that I am pretty confident would make the cut out of 160 players every single time. But winning every time isn't possible - when in elimination a single game has such an impact.. so you need a little bit of luck... but A player like Alex needs a lot less than the rest of us to achieve a win like this :p

If someone it consistently "lucky" all the time, it isn't luck. ;)

Probably should have put a spoiler tag round that.

Part of getting better for me was working out when I'd won/lost because of variance, and when it was because of decisions I'd made. Generally I was pleased with my play throughout the tournament, and both of the Indexings were fired off at the right time given the circumstances. However it would be a bit insulting to my opponents if I was to claim that finding 7/9 points with them was pure skill. You do have to give yourself the chance to get good luck, but that doesn't discount the fact that you had it.
I'm sorry if me mentioning luck when talking about my wins reeks of false humility though, and I intend to start mentioning it less.
