Le Oxford League?

Postby Pete » Mon Oct 26, 2015 8:50 am

All-round top egg and arch-rival Johno has created both a league for Reading and some league software to provide some sweet UI chrome on the league.

Is there any interest among the Oxford gowns in having a local Oxford league for local people? Johno has made it trivial to spin up an instance of the league software -- you can see Reading's league here -- and we can incorporate the league into our normal play on Monday evenings.

The league is just a bot of fun and in no way a serious ranking: the achievements are fun and can provide some goals during deck-construction and play.

Thoughts?

Obviously not likely to take part, but I endorse league play! It's been successful and well received by your southern neighbours. What's nice is that it adds a little structure to meet-ups, adding achievements to promote some diversity in deck-building and something to play for at any level and there's competition for players that want that.

Also appreciate the use of fledgling Desperado. All feedback appreciated!

I'll spin up a Desperado instance for the Oxford league in time for next Monday's session. To participate all you have to do is inform me of your results in person or on the forum.

I'll import the same achievements that the reading lot have for this first season; you can see their list of acheevs here.

I'll just run the league "season" in sync with Reading's league; theirs has already been running for a while but ::shrug::.

I am in no position to offer official prize support, but I feel pretty confident that the winner can expect an alt-art Chaos Theory ID from the Thirsty Meeples batch. Probably; don't quote me on that.

If you want to set up and run a mirror league Pete, I will set up the appropriate forum threads etc.

I'm in favour of any and all Netrunner activities, I just can't push it up my priority list high enough to make it viable for me to run!

The Oxford Massive League is ready for Monday.

The achievements for this inaugural season are the same as those of our arch-rivals; I did add one extra acheev to stimulate scalping one of our rivals: seek them out wherever they crawl and show them your quality.

:P

I've added Guy, Brendan, and myself as players because we've all indicated our assent to participate. If you want to participate just let me know either here or in person. You don't have to participate, that's fine really.

In anticipation of your imminent return Rahul, I have added two new acheevs to the Oxford league. You may not be here until the Xmas hols, but your star will burn brightly as folk scrabble to get the acheevs named after you.

Insane In The Mem-brain

Inflict 4 brain damage in a single game.

In honour of Rahul's Cybernetics Division and his glee in inflicting huge amounts of brain damage.

Wunderkind

Win a game using a Chaos Theory deck containing 3xThe Toolbox and 3xExploratory Romp.

'cos Rahul is a prodigy and he was recently rocking a Chaos Theory deck.

That's the "street name" for us, the Oxford meta.

Our "rivals" from Reading go by the name The NeoReading Gridders; if you're there on Saturday you'll meet three of the bravest Gridders ever to face off against the boot of Brenlactus. The meta from Bristol are The Bristol Star Ponies; we're going to lay waste to their grid later in November.

I have a spare set of Jacksons; just bring 3 spare sleeves and you'll be set.

Brenlactus = Brendan in his guise as a Star God who devours Reading's NetRunner prizes.

TED-DIE wrote:Oh and you said the Bristol Star Ponies in November???

Brendan and I are tentatively slotted to attend Bristol later this month for a NetRunner tourney.

TED-DIE wrote:Why Star Ponies???

I believe the name arose because Andy, Rob, Alex, and the rest of the Bristol NetRunners love to ride shaggy ponies bareback along Bristol beaches on cloudless nights while chanting a cappella versions of 4Tet songs at the starry firmament.

Well, that's what I heard anyway from a drunken old sailor called Zadok who panhandled me when I was wandering around Bristol docks of an evening some months back; he also rattled some unlikely guff about an underwater city, depth charges, and an esoteric order so take his words with a pinch of salt.

I've added all the games I know about from tonight's session.

Guy is storming ahead thanks to winning games and farming acheevs. Who plays Criminal without Account Siphon in their deck? Evidently Guy does and he has the 'cheev to prove it, good work Guy!

Here are some random thoughts about the league.

I have zero-negative-infinity interest in tracking points on a leaderboard. It just doesn't interest me, it's not why I play. Brendan made the observation that the current setup of the league -- there is a "leader" on a ranking board -- promotes playing decks that are proven winners. I'm not all that interested in "ranking" us via this league, it's just meant to provide some fun via the 'cheevs. I could set the points for a win to 0, but then why have the league?

I am interested in going all Statto via the league. I'd like the league -- and the league software -- to answer questions like these:

  • My most-played ID.
  • My least played ID.
  • My most-played faction.
  • My least played faction.
  • The ID I have the most success with.
  • The ID I have the least success with.
  • The ID I play against the most. (Andy? Kate? Blue Sun?)
  • The ID I play against the least. (GRNDL?)
  • Who I have the most success against.
  • Who do I play against the most? (Maybe Phil?)
  • Who do I play against the least? (Tom the Elder?)
  • Who I have the least success against. (This is likely Brendan.)
  • What's the breakdown of how I win? (Agenda Score/Steal, Meat Damage Kill, Net Damage Kill)
  • What's the breakdown of how I lose? (Agenda Score/Steal, Deck'd Out, etc.)
  • How close are my games? Do I win/lose a lot of games by 1 or 2 points or are they mostly whitewashes?
  • What's my longest winning streak?
  • What's my longest losing streak?
  • Who in the league overall has the longest winning streak?
  • Who in the league overall has the longest losing streak? (Aww.)
  • etc.
As it stands the league software isn't set up to track and answer this stuff. It could be made to track this stuff if folks were interested.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

My suggestion would be to go back to first principles. To my mind we're not a group where competitiveness is our focus so the league isn't there to find the "best"" player where it might be in other towns/cities/metas etc. If it were then I know, at least for my part, that Brendan and Stu at the very least (and probably many more of you) could bust out honed toned decks and start bashing out victory after victory against me.

What I do really like though are the achievements but we don't necessarily have to have this or them as a league. We might not even all them achievements. Maybe we could take this list of things and put them as a challenge board and other people than Pete could set them for each other. I really liked playing a Criminal without Siphon and deciding what that meant for a deck, and finding my way into 8 remotes as corp without necessarily meaning to.

For now I'll report that I did split with my Reading enemy - taking the runner achievement. I also beat Brendan twice (though sheer nonsense on my corp game, ironically it was a Philotic kill which Phil was trying to do all night). I also got the "look before you leap" Cheeve using Enhanced VIsion rather than ye standard Infiltration/Silhouette shenanigans which pleases me.

In terms of all the things you want to track Pete this is doable definitely, but it requires a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet I would happily try to put together but would want people to be helpful in helping me populate, and it also wouldn't be as pretty as the Neoreading league thing.

Well I got off to a flying start! btw I played Tom Langton as Maxx vs Spark and lost and also played PE vs Sunny and lost. Current tally is 5 loss 1 win lol.
I did get an achievement though "Influence Police" . I can't remember the exact moment but PE did trash a shed load of runner cards and a good few of those were out of faction like medium in sunny etc. DO they have to be installed cards?

I like this. I can turn the league into a challenge board by the "side effect" of setting the points for a win/tie to 0. That way only the points for participation and acheevs count.

From grip qualifies, good work Stu!

Johno wrote:Influence Police includes damage from grip.

I have updated the board to reflect the above changes. Guy is storming to an insane lead and has now painted a target on his back. Let's get him!
